A **certification** is a credential with its own requirements. You decide what earns it — complete a Journey, pass a quiz, attend an event, or any combination — and Juno awards it the moment a learner qualifies, or holds it for your approval. Each certification has a **Learners** tab that shows who holds it, who qualifies, and who is still on the way.

<Note>
  Certifications are in beta and roll out gradually. Until they are on for your organization, Journeys award certificates the way described in [Certifications for learners](/learning/certifications#creating-certificates).

## Certificates and certifications

| | What it is | Where you set it |
| - | - | - |
| **Certificate design** | The document learners download: layout, background, title, logo. | The **Certificate design** field of a certification, or a Journey's certificate settings. |
| **Certification** | What earns that document: the requirements, the audience, the expiration, and whether an admin approves each award. | **Admin → Content → Certifications**. |

Journeys that already issue a certificate keep doing so. When you are ready, convert them so you can manage every credential from one place (see [Certifications from a Journey](#certifications-from-a-journey)).

***

## Where to find it

Go to **Admin → Content → Certifications**. The tab has two views:

* **Certifications** — the definitions you manage.
* **User certifications** — every certificate your learners hold. See [User certifications](/admin/user-certifications).

| Who | What they see |
| - | - |
| Admin for **Content** | Both views. Creates, edits, activates, archives, and awards every certification. |
| A certification's **editors** (any role) | The **Certifications** view, limited to the certifications they edit. Editors can change, activate, archive, and award those. See [Certification editors](#certification-editors). |
| Manager for **Content** | **User certifications** only. |

***

## The Certifications list

The list shows every certification with its status. Filter with the **All**, **Draft**, **Active**, and **Archived** toggles (each shows a count) and search by name.

| Column | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Certification** | Name |
| **Status** | **Draft** (not awarding yet), **Active** (awarding), or **Archived** (stopped) |
| **Requirements** | How many items the rule reads |
| **Certified learners** | How many learners hold it |
| **Last updated** | When it was last saved |

Select a row to open the certification. Two actions sit above the list:

* **New certification** starts a draft.
* The **Automations** icon opens the certification automations — the triggers that fire when a certification is earned, when it is about to expire, or when a learner qualifies and waits for approval. See [Certification triggers](/admin/automations#certification-triggers).

## Create a certification

<Prerequisites
  items={[
"Admin access to Admin → Content, or an invitation as an editor of the certification",
"The courses, quizzes, events, or Journeys learners will need, already created",
]}
/>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a draft">
    Select **New certification**. Give it a name (required) and a description that tells learners what the credential stands for.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick or design the certificate">
    Under **Certificate design**, select **Design certificate** to build the document learners download. You can also leave this empty for now and add a design later; the preview panel on the right shows the design as you go.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set expiration and awarding">
    Under **Expiration**, keep **No expiration** or choose **Expires** and set a period or a date. Under **Awarding**, choose whether learners earn it automatically or after you approve them.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Limit the audience (optional)">
    Add **Audience groups** or **Audience people** if only some learners may earn it. Leave both empty so anyone can.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the requirements">
    Build the rule under **Requirements** (see [Build the requirements](#build-the-requirements)), then select **Create draft**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Activate it">
    Select **Activate**. From now on, learners earn the certification as soon as they meet its requirements. The dialog also offers to award it right away to learners who already qualify.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<VideoWalkthrough src="/images/admin/certifications-create.gif" caption="Creating a certification: name, design, expiration, awarding, requirements, draft" />

### Settings

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Name** | The credential's name, shown to learners and in reports. Up to 200 characters. | — |
| **Description** | What the credential stands for. Shown on the learner's progress card. | Empty |
| **Certificate design** | The document learners download. **Design certificate** opens the designer; later, **Edit design** or **Remove design**. | None |
| **Accredible credential** | Also issue an Accredible credential to learners who earn the certification. Shown only when [Accredible](/integrations/accredible) is connected. | Don't issue |
| **Expiration** | **No expiration**, or **Expires** with an **Expiration time** (6 months to 10 years after the award), a **Custom date**, or both. If you set both, the earlier date applies. Applies to certificates earned from now on; certificates already earned keep their date. | No expiration |
| **Awarding** | **Automatically, when a learner meets the requirements**, or **After an admin approves it**. With approval, learners who meet the requirements wait in the Learners tab until you award them. | Automatically |
| **Audience groups** | Only members of these [groups](/collaboration/groups) can earn it. Members who have not started yet appear as **Not started** on the Learners tab. | Any learner |
| **Audience people** | Specific learners who can earn it, alongside the groups. Search by name or email. | Any learner |

<Warning>
  A certificate design can be shared by several certifications. Editing it in place changes the design for every certification that uses it, including certificates learners already hold. When you edit a shared design, Juno asks whether to update it everywhere or save a copy for this certification only.
</Warning>

## Build the requirements

Requirements are a rule that reads as a sentence: **Learners must meet** *all* / *any* / *at least N* **of these requirements**. Each requirement is one item of content and the action that satisfies it:

| Content | Counts when | Shown as |
| - | - | - |
| Quiz | The learner passes it (reaches the quiz's passing score). A completed but failed quiz does not count. | **Pass** |
| Event | The learner attends any of its sessions. | **Attend** |
| Course, Journey, SCORM, task, or any other unit | The learner completes it. | **Complete** |

Juno picks the action from the content type; you only choose the content.

1. Select **Add content**. The **Add required content** dialog lists your courses, Journeys, modules, quizzes, SCORM units, tasks, and events. Tick one or more and select **Add**.
2. To combine conditions, select **Add group**. A group has its own *all* / *any* / *at least N* setting and its own requirements. Groups nest up to three levels deep.
3. To drop an item, select **Remove requirement**; to drop a whole group, **Remove group**.

<VideoWalkthrough src="/images/admin/certifications-rule-builder.gif" caption="Adding content, then a nested group with an 'at least' condition" />

Two examples:

* **Onboarding certification** — *all* of: Complete "Company onboarding" (Journey), Pass "Security basics" (quiz).
* **Product specialist** — *all* of: Attend "Product deep dive" (event), and a group with *at least 2* of: Complete "Pricing", Complete "Integrations", Complete "Support playbook".

A certification can have up to 50 requirements, and every group needs at least one. If content in a rule is later deleted or is no longer shared with you, the row says so; completions learners already have still count.

<Tip>
  A rule with a single requirement (for example, Complete one Journey) is the same credential a Journey used to issue on its own, with the Learners tab, approval, and automations added on top.
</Tip>

## Activate, award, and archive

A certification awards only while it is **Active**. The actions in the header change with the status:

| Status | Actions |
| - | - |
| **Draft** | **Activate** · **Archive** (in the **⋮** menu) |
| **Active** | **Award existing learners** (or **Award all pending** with approval) · **Archive** |
| **Archived** | **Restore as draft** |

Save your changes first; the actions stay disabled while the form has unsaved edits.

**Activate** opens a dialog that checks who already meets the requirements. Keep **Also award it now to the learners who already qualify** ticked to award them on activation, or untick it so only learners who qualify from now on earn it.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/juno-76d1c392/J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA/images/admin/certifications-activate.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA&q=85&s=65a6f72d55fc5a9d61d30a964cd4c684" alt="The Activate dialog with the count of learners who already qualify" width="1280" height="800" data-path="images/admin/certifications-activate.png" />

**Award existing learners** runs the same check later — for example after you change the rule. Saving a rule change on an Active certification opens this prompt automatically. Learners who already hold the certification keep it, whatever the new rule says.

**Archive** stops the certification: learners stop earning it, and everyone who already holds it keeps it. You can restore an archived certification as a draft.

<Note>
  Awards are permanent. Editing the rule, resetting a learner's progress, or removing someone from the audience never takes a certificate away. To remove a certificate from one learner, use [User certifications](/admin/user-certifications#delete-a-certificate).
</Note>

## Learners tab

Open a certification and select **Learners** to see where everyone stands.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/juno-76d1c392/J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA/images/admin/certifications-learners.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA&q=85&s=e1026f89658d96e92295b9679c9eb47f" alt="The Learners tab with the status filter, progress bars, and an Award button" width="1280" height="800" data-path="images/admin/certifications-learners.png" />

| Status | Who |
| - | - |
| **Certified** | Holds the certification. |
| **Qualifies** | Meets the requirements but doesn't hold it yet. With approval-based awarding this reads **Awaiting approval**. |
| **In progress** | Has started at least one required item. |
| **Not started** | Belongs to an audience group but hasn't started anything. |

Filter by status (each toggle shows a count) and search by name or email.

| Column | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Learner** | Name and email |
| **Status** | One of the four statuses above |
| **Requirements met** | A bar with **N of M** requirements met. A **Not assigned to required content** hint means the learner isn't assigned to some of the content yet; select it to assign them. |
| **Awarded on** | The award date |
| **Expires** | The expiration date with a **Valid**, **Expires soon** (within 90 days), or **Expired** chip |

### Award a learner

Learners with the **Qualifies** or **Awaiting approval** status have an **Award** button. Select it and confirm to award the certification now. With automatic awarding, **Qualifies** is usually short-lived: Juno awards within moments of the learner meeting the last requirement.

<VideoWalkthrough src="/images/admin/certifications-award.gif" caption="Awarding a learner who qualifies" />

### Learner details

Select a learner to open their details: the status, the award and expiration dates when awarded, and the requirements checklist with a tick next to each item met. For certified learners the checklist reflects the current rule; the award stays even if they no longer meet it.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/juno-76d1c392/J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA/images/admin/certifications-learner-drawer.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=J7_Wlg3tPXoctjrA&q=85&s=d311c0f45ee971f013a9cb4d3cd2430f" alt="A learner's details with the requirements checklist" width="1280" height="800" data-path="images/admin/certifications-learner-drawer.png" />

### Assign missing content

When a learner isn't assigned to content the rule requires, the **Not assigned to required content** hint opens **Assign content**. Tick the items to assign — rows already **Done** or **Assigned** are marked, and events point you to **Assign from the event** — then select **Assign**. The learner gets the default assignment email. A line under the list tells you whether the selected content lets them meet the requirements.

### Export

**Export** downloads the current view as a spreadsheet with Name, Email, Status, Requirements met, Requirements, Awarded on, and Expires. The tab lists up to 10,000 learners, certified learners first.

***

## Certification editors

Give someone who isn't a Content Admin the right to manage one certification. Select **Editors** in the header to open **Certification editors**, search for people under **Add editors**, and select **Save**. Editors can change, activate, archive, and award that certification; Admins always have access.

* The person who created the certification is always an editor (marked **Creator**) and can't be removed.
* Editors reach their certifications from **Admin → Content → Certifications**, which is the only Admin page they see.
* If you remove yourself and you aren't an Admin, you lose access to the certification once you save.

***

## Certifications from a Journey

Open a Journey in the editor and select **Certifications** in the top bar. The popover lists the certifications that require this Journey — with a green check when an Active one does — and lets you:

* **Create certification** — opens a new draft named after the Journey, with one requirement: Complete the Journey. Add more requirements, a design, and expiration, then activate it.
* **Convert to certification** — shown when the Journey still issues a legacy certificate. Conversion creates a certification with the Journey's design and expiration, so you can manage it with your other certifications.
* **Open** — jumps to a certification you can edit. If you can't, the popover says to ask an Admin.

A Journey that is one requirement among several is marked **One of several requirements**.

<VideoWalkthrough src="/images/admin/certifications-from-journey.gif" caption="Creating a certification from a Journey" />

Learners see **Completing this journey earns \[certification]** on the Journey page until they earn it (or **qualifies you for** with approval-based awarding).

***

## Deleting required content

You can't delete content that an Active certification requires. The delete fails with **Can't delete: it's required by \[certification]. Archive or edit it first.** Remove the item from the rule, or archive the certification, then delete. Draft and archived certifications don't block deletion.

***

## Certification automations

Certifications come with three automation triggers: **Certification earned**, **Before a certification expires**, and **Certification requirements met**. Use them to congratulate learners, warn them before a credential lapses, or tell an Admin that someone waits for approval. Open them from the **Automations** icon above the list or on the Learners tab, or from **Admin → Automations**. See [Certification triggers](/admin/automations#certification-triggers).
